Celebrating Mandela Day: A Successful Career Expo

 On Mandela Day, 18 July 2024, the schools in Tshinane Circuit, Thulamela Local Municipality, part of the greater Vhembe District gathered to celebrate and honour Nelson Mandela's legacy through the Tshinapfene Career Expo. In partnership with Services SETA, Muelekanyi Technical Services facilitated the event aimed to inspire and guide the futures of 1,900 Grade 8 and 9 students, providing them with crucial insights into various career paths and educational opportunities.

A Day of Inspiration and Information

The career expo kicked off with the arrival and seating of the eager students and attendees. The atmosphere was filled with anticipation as everyone settled in for a day of learning and inspiration.

Opening Ceremony

The day begun with the singing of the South African National Anthem, uniting everyone in a moment of national pride. This was followed by a warm welcome address from Khosi MT Shavhani of the Tshivhase Traditional Council, who set the tone for the day. Services SETA then took the stage to explain the purpose of the day, emphasizing the importance of career guidance and education.

Inspiring Moments and Educational Insights

An inspirational video showcased Nelson Mandela's legacy and highlighted the critical role of education in shaping successful futures. This was a poignant reminder of Mandela's enduring impact and the importance of events like the Tshinapfene Career Expo. The Department of Labour followed with a presentation, discussing opportunities in the agricultural sector. Representatives from the Department of Higher Education and Training introduced the Post-School Education and Training (PSET) system, providing students with valuable information on their educational options.

Higher Education and Training

The University of Pretoria and a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College gave brief presentations, outlining the benefits and opportunities of higher education and vocational training. These sessions were crucial in helping students understand the diverse pathways available to them. An informative video introduced the Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs), followed by presentations from FoodBev SETA, Transport SETA, and AgriSETA. These presentations offered insights into various industries and the support available for skills development.

Social Services and Safety

The Department of Social Development addressed the audience , followed by a presentation from the South African Police Service (SAPS), highlighting career opportunities in social services and law enforcement. These presentations underscored the diverse career paths available within the public sector. Financial Support and Agricultural Opportunities.  A representative from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) explained the financial support options available to students, ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder their educational aspirations. The Department of Agriculture concluded the presentations with an insightful discussion on careers in agriculture.

Closing and Exhibition

His Majesty Mailasumbwa MPK Tshivhase delivered closing remarks summarizing the day's events and key takeaways. The day ended with an exhibition where students had the opportunity to explore various booths, gather information, and enjoy a lunch break.
